“Etta didn’t know what grabbed her attention more—the pretty chapel that was almost complete or the bare-chested man who had built it.”

CHAPTER FIFTEEN

“Holy crap! It looks just like the chapel in Tender Heart.” Carly spoke so loudly that the birds in the trees took flight. Emery was about to tell her to keep it down, but of course Savannah took care of that for her.

“Would you lower your voice, Carly Sue?” Savannah glanced around. “Sweet Baby Jesus. First, I allow you to talk me into breaking and entering. And now I let you talk me into trespassing. If word of our nefarious activities on this trip ever gets back to Miles’s mother, she’ll have a stroke and I’ll have a broken engagement.” Her gaze returned to the chapel, and the look of awe on her face said it all. “But this does make the trip all worth it.” She gave Emery a quick hug. “You did it, honey. You found a piece of Tender Heart.”

Emery hooked her arms through Carly and Savannah’s, and all three of them stared at the little white church with its stained-glass windows and tall spire. She had little doubt that they were all thinking of Tender Heart and the brides who had found their happily-ever-afters. This was proven when Carly spoke.

“I have no desire to get married,” Carly said.

“Of course you do. Now stop being a party pooper and close your eyes.”

Carly huffed but did as Savannah instructed. And Emery did as well. As soon as her eyes were closed, an image of Cole popped into her head. An image of him carrying her out the doors of the chapel amid a shower of rice. She quickly opened her eyes as Carly pulled them toward the chapel.

“Come on. Let’s go inside.”

Emery held back. “Maybe Savannah is right. Maybe we should wait until Cole invites us.” It didn’t feel wrong bringing her friends to the chapel, but it did feel wrong to step inside without permission. Unfortunately, Carly was too stubborn to pay attention.

“Are you kidding? I traveled hundreds of miles to see some remnant of Tender Heart, and now that I’ve finally found it, I’m not leaving until I’ve seen the entire attraction.” She released their hands and climbed the steps. “Besides, if they wanted to keep people out, they’d lock the door.” She pushed it open.

Savannah glanced at Emery and shrugged. “Maybe I’ll just take a quick peek.” She hurried in after Carly.

Emery stood at the bottom of the steps and finally admitted to herself that it
